Chicago-based indie rock band, Slow Pulp, stops in Deep Ellum on their 2023 North American and European tour. Debuting their newest album Yard, the band mixes styles of shoegaze and bedroom pop to create an electric performance.
Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Slow Pulp released their first album in 2015 and have been jamming ever since. With Emily Massey on vocals, Alex Leeds on bass, Teddy Mathews on drums, and Henry Stoehr on guitar, Slow Pulp experiments with dreamy vocals and indie rock-style sounds.
As the rain pours down in Deep Ellum, fans rush into Club Dada when the doors open and converse near the stage, waiting for the lights to dim. Before Slow Pulp appears on stage, New York indie rock band Babehoven opens with a delicate and airy set featuring their newest song, Chariot. Scheduled to open the rest of Slow Pulp’s North American tour, Babehoven sets the perfect mood with soulful and dreamlike sounds.
With a packed venue, Slow Pulp enters the stage. Playing songs from their albums Big Day, Moveys, and Yard, the crowd sang as the band went through the setlist. “So, who is on their period here?” Emily asked the audience as they looked at each other and laughed. After a handful of girls raised their hands, Emily replied, “I hope you guys don’t have cramps; that is the name of our next song.” As the audience laughs, Teddy starts the song Cramps on the drums, and the audience begins to sing along and dance. As Slow Pulp comes to the end of their setlist, they return to the stage for an encore. Playing their most famous song, High, the crowd moves to the euphoric and electronic beats while Emily pauses and asks them to sing along to the chorus on the count of 3. Finishing up the set with the last song, the group is left with smiles from ear to ear.
After the show, people are lined up for the merchandise as both Babehoven and Slow Pulp come to the floor to take pictures with fans. Although the show is over in Dallas, Slow Pulp and Babehoven are scheduled for many more shows in the U.S., including New York City, Boston and Chicago.
I am currently attending the University of North Texas with a photojournalism major. I love going to concerts of all genres, whether I am stage diving or headbanging, I never miss an opportunity to appreciate live music. In my free time, I enjoy thrifting for CD's and records, spending time with my cats, going to art exhibits, and traveling (especially to NYC). My biggest inspiration is Danny Clinch, and one day I aspire to open up my own gallery to showcase my work!
