ACL 2024 Artist Spotlight: Tyler, the Creator

Iconic rapper Tyler, the Creator will make his momentous return to this year’s Austin City Limits.

Three years ago, Tyler, the Creator replaced DaBaby as the Sunday headliner for ACL 2021. This show marked the first performance of his new album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. Now, Tyler returns to ACL without a new album to perform.

Usually, Tyler is incredibly consistent about releasing a new album every two years. This rule has not been broken for his entire career. And even though he didn’t start a new era in 2023, he did release a new project: CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale. This deluxe album features eight new songs totaling 25 minutes of runtime- almost half the original album’s length (52 minutes). The Estate Sale extends the era with great new songs, including Vince Staples and A$AP Rocky features. While it’s not a new album, it’s enough new material to make a new and exciting setlist, especially if Tyler brings back old hits from his deep discography to mix it up. Still, The Estate Sale ends with a declaration from the album’s narrator, DJ Drama: “I guarantee another era is upon us.”

Tyler has also released two hit features since his last ACL performance: “Cash In Cash Out” with Pharell and 21 Savage and “Come On, Let’s Go” with Nigo. Both songs would make for exciting live performances and welcome additions to the setlist. And for anyone who hasn’t watched it yet, “Cash In Cash Out” has an incredibly creative music video worth checking out for nothing else if pure spectacle.

Even if Tyler’s setlist ends up being similar to his 2021 performance, it would be worth seeing. That show featured creative stage design (Tyler sang from a boat mounted on hydraulics), explosive pyrotechnics and mosh pits, and extended choruses that brought the crowd together to sing.

If you’re looking for similar artists to check out at ACL, Vince Staples and Kevin Abstract are both creative rappers playing at the festival. Whokilledkenny is an Austin rapper who matches the more braggadocious aspects of Tyler’s songs, and The Marías have a melodic sound that matches Tyler’s work with Kali Uchis.

Austin City Limits 2024 will be happening on 10/4-10/6 and 10/11-10/13. Check out the full lineup and get your ACL tickets here: https://www.aclfestival.com/
