Soccer Mommy’s new album, Sometimes, Forever focuses on losing yourself in different aspects (mental health, relationships, substances) but eventually coming back to the moments where your heart truly feels safe.

The record is an expansive instrumentation for Soccer Mommy as she explores darker themes lyrically and sonically but still sticking true to their indie rock and shoegaze roots. The grungy and brooding elements combined with a ghostly atmosphere in some of the tracks (Darkness Forever, Still, Unholy Affliction) is a new take for the band. The themes covered throughout Sometimes, Forever reflect the upscale hill of emotions that Allison experiences from her day to day life. It is important for Allison to talk freely about her struggles about mental health and its effects within her songwriting. In addition, the vocals on this album are retrospective and messed around in order to imitate the environment or the sentiments of the lyrical contents.

Sometimes, Forever release comes after just 2 short years from her previous indie-pop synth based album, Color Theory released in February 2020, and the band’s critically acclaimed debut album, Clean in 2018. The band has won over the hearts across the world with their heart wrenching lyrics and indie rock sound.

Soccer Mommy announced the new album Sometimes, Forever along with the release of the lead single, “Shotgun.” The single represents the euphoric and passionate rush of emotions encompassed by being so enamored with another person that it overtakes your entire being. The feelings are so heartfelt and vital that you will do anything the person asks whilst simply waiting at the edge of your seat for them. The track shares the experience of the relationship through small yet intricate moments and details. The chorus sings: “So whenever you want me, I’ll be around. I’m a bullet on a shotgun waiting to sound” which completely fuels the admiration felt by Allison. The sudden deep and gritty bass at the start of the track soon contrasted with the comforting sound of warm shoegaze guitars sends you into a different headspace making you experience the romantic venture illustrated in the songwriting.

Despite the infatuation of a relationship detailed in “Shotgun,” the track “Feel It All The Time” depicts the overbearingness and feelings of anxiety washing over. The rush of wanting to escape and leave the city in order to find comfort wishing for a breath of fresh air to combat the numbness. The lyrics read: “So I wanna drive out where the sun shines. Drown out the noise and the way I feel but even the light is so temporary. And I see the dark at the back of my heels.” The twangy guitars mixed with rhythmic bass and  drums creates an instant sway to make you get lost in the instrumentation.

Sometimes, Forever by Soccer Mommy goes deep into Allison’s antagonizing fears of wanting to escape from the constant self sabotage that usually follows along with mental health issues. By looking onto the bright side of the things Sophie Allison loves the most she uses the uplifting memories to counterbalance the strong pull of falling into a spiral. The record tugs at your heartstrings with its infinite ways of calling to your emotions piece by piece.
